Spirituality in modern life

Spirituality is a subject of interest and intrigue in modern society. From academic journals and religious papers to coffee table books and glossy magazines, there’s plenty of content circulating on the subject. Spirituality plays an increasingly important role in many people’s lives and there are various reasons for its growing popularity. For many, there is an interest in the principles and cornerstones, for others an intrigue related to what’s out there beyond what we can see and hear in our day to day lives and for some, a need for reassurance and guidance as they go about negotiating a busy, hectic and often stressful life.

One of the many draws of spirituality is its diversity. Many of us may be influenced by spirituality without fully realising it. You don’t have to attend services or take time out every day to meditate to be spiritual, there are lots of different forms of spirituality and activities linked to spiritual living. These include:

  • Yoga
  • Meditation
  • Getting out into nature and developing an appreciation for your surroundings
  • Attending healing and spiritualist services
  • Getting in touch and working with mediums
  • Forming deeper relationships with the people around us

Spirituality often encompasses our day to day lives subconsciously.

Becoming more spiritual

Spirituality is an accessible field that is easy and enjoyable to explore. You can connect with the people around you on a deeper level, arrange to see a medium or visit a spiritualist church, take note of your environment and the amazing sights, sounds and smells that surround you and take time out to think, reflect and meditate.

If you are interested in finding out more about the spirit world or are eager to connect with spirits (perhaps people who were close to you that you have lost, for example) it is beneficial to talk to a medium. Mediums have a connection with the spirit world. They follow spiritual guidelines and communicate messages and indications from spirits when they (the spirits) choose to come forward.

Living a more spiritual life

For some people, spirituality is an absolute way of life and a guiding light with major influences on every major action they choose to take. For others, it is a concept they turn to in times of need, for example if they or someone they love are in need of healing or if they have an important decision to make. Perhaps the most important thing to do if you’re interested in spirituality or intrigued by the notion of living a more spiritual life, is to come up with your own definition of spirituality and determine what it means in terms of how you live your day to day life and how spirituality affects, defines and influences you as a person.

What does spirituality mean to you?

For many spiritualists, the concept means that we are all part of a something a lot bigger than the small world we inhabit on a daily basis. This not only creates a sense of community and brotherhood, but also an appreciation of the vastness, in terms of space and time, surrounding us. For some, being spiritual may simply enable them to connect with people and places on a deeper level. For some, it may be a support system and a source of constant reassurance. For others, it serves a means of healing and bettering themselves and for some it becomes a key to communicating with those they have lost.

Being spiritual takes many different forms and one person who describes themselves as spiritual may live a very different life to another spiritual person. However, there are shared beliefs, practices, traditions and appreciations. If you are interested in spirituality, here are some guidelines and recommendations that may help you to become more spiritual:

  • meditate and reflect
  • connect with others
  • broaden your horizons
  • visit new places and open your eyes to the world around you
  • be creative and don’t be afraid to push your creative boundaries
  • try new things
  • devote time to your interests
  • learn what makes you feel blessed, loved, enthused and motivated
